Llangcarwik (“a place of awakening”) is a 30 day residential substance abuse treatment center that focuses on improving family unity. Patients’ families are welcome and an important part of treatment. Individual, group and family counseling are available for participants, and children can visit a child therapist.
"It is unique in that it was developed from the ground up to accommodate families,” says Jim Miller, Port Graham Alcohol Counselor and Llangcarwik Director. It entails a “Two Worlds” approach, using Western and Native American methods for chemical dependency treatment.
At other residential treatment centers, rural residents must leave their families and home communities to get treatment in urban settings such as Anchorage or Kenai. Besides the cost of travel, Alaska Native patients are in an unfamiliar environment at a very stressful point in their lives. In Port Graham, patients are in a setting much like their home community.
Llangcarwik offers a wide variety of treatment and educational options in addition to substance abuse counseling and family services. We also address trauma, nutrition, men’s issues, Spirit recovery, assimilation, navigating the legal system, emotional management skills, historic trauma, multi-generational grief and cultural dependency issues.
An important priority at the center is community rehabilitation and assimilation. After the first week of residence, the patients can attend community events such as women’s craft nights, Church, volleyball and basketball. Participants develop their own house rules and chores list.
The Village of Port Graham Tribal Council supports the mission of the treatment center. They have invested the time and means of supportive services because they believe that people in their villages and surrounding areas deserve to live healthy lives. These people ultimately give back to their community in terms of employment and increased positive personal, family and community relationships. In addition, the Village Council supports the salary of Jim Miller, whose time is offered to this project as an In-Kind donation.
North Pacific Rim Housing Authority constructed and maintains the building Llangcarwic is housed in.
