Responsible for participating in the Kodiak College’s OEC/AA in Alutiiq (Sugt’stun) program, teach Sugt’stun classes in Chugach Region schools and Head Start programs helping all students to develop the ability to understand and speak Sugt’stun. Willingness to travel to meetings throughout the year is required.
Essential duties and responsibilities enroll in Kodiak College OEC program for a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester leading to an AA degree with an Occupation Endorsement Credential in Alutiiq (Sugt’stun). Teach Sugt’stun in a Chugach Region school and Head Start program. Continue to study Sugt’stun to develop proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Participate in all Chugachmiut training programs including ongoing work with the Master Speaker, individual conference calls three times per week and weekly group conversations in Sugt’stun, leading to a higher level of fluency in Sugt’stun. Meet weekly with the Master Speaker via telephone or Skype, or PolyCom to review language gained, for assessment, and to learn the Chugach Region Sugt’stun Orthography. Participate in a formal Sugt’stun Teacher training program, including Quarterly Regional Conferences and college classes. Observe in classrooms at all levels at least one hour per week to gain an understanding of child and adolescent development
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Mastery of Sugt’stun at the level of a semi-fluent speaker is required.
- Preference will be given to a person with knowledge of the community and an understanding of the language.

Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to5:00 p.m. with an hour for lunch. This a full-time 37.5 hours per week and 1,950 hours a year position. Chugachmiut maintains a drug and alcohol free, non-smoking environment. There may be occasional travel to the villages of the region, must be willing and able to travel in light aircraft.
