Project Information
The role of this contract is a part-time and temporary contractual position to conduct critical research on the impact of climate change on Indigenous communities in the Chugach region. The focus on cultural heritage and Traditional Ecological Knowledge involves collecting and analyzing data related to ongoing climate resiliency efforts in the Chugach region, collaborating with Tribal communities, and producing reports that inform climate adaptation strategies instrumental in constructing a bridge between cultural heritage and climate action.
The qualified firms or individuals have experience in climate research and cultural preservation, with a passion for integrating Indigenous knowledge into climate justice efforts. Demonstrate a strong background in Alaska Native self-determination projects and experience in successfully overseeing a collaborative project that achieves long-term objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Research the effects of climate change on Indigenous communities and traditional ecological knowledge within the Chugach region.
- Provide data-driven guidance in establishing a new Tribal Climate Justice Strategic Plan.
- Work closely with Tribal communities to document and integrate Indigenous knowledge into climate adaptation initiatives.
- Identify research gaps and propose new studies or projects to advance cultural heritage preservation.
- Compile findings into reports, presentations, and resources for the Climate Justice Commission and external stakeholders.
- Assist in the development of two new Climate Justice grant proposals to be submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and 1 other federal funder.
Activities in the Work Service Contract
- Collect and analyze data related to climate change impacts on cultural heritage sites and community well-being.
- Collaborate with Indigenous communities to ensure research reflects their ecological knowledge and priorities.
- Produce reports, presentations, and resources to support the Tribal Climate Justice Commission’s goals.
- Present research findings at community meetings, regional summits, and conferences.
- Support the monitoring and evaluation of project activities through relevant data analysis.
- Assist with understanding issues related to climate justice in the region and collaborate in the outreach and training initiatives
- Facilitate new strategic plan drafting for the Chugachmiut Regional Climate Tribal Justice Commission using the results of the data and other research findings
- Develop logic models, literature reviews, need cases, work plans, and other elements of two federal Climate Justice grant proposals during the second year of the project

Necessary knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Must have established methodologies and a portfolio of doctoral (or other terminal degree) experience in applying these methodologies to climate resiliency efforts.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the Chugach Sugpiaq (also known as Chugach Alutiiq) and dAXunhyuu (also known as Eyak) cultures or the Sugt’stun and dAXunhyuuga’ languages.
- Must showcase prior experience in systems that establish and protect Indigenous data sovereignty and self-determination.
