Wildland Firefighting

Established in May 2005 as a Type II Hand Crew, the Yukon Fire Crew received Initial-Attack status in 2006. Chugachmiut has been a nationally recognized player in wildland firefighting since 1998. The crew are ready to fight fires throughout Alaska and the western United States and perform fire fuels project work to reduce the likelihood of wild fires in certain areas.

Join the Denali Wildland Fire Module or Yukon Fire Crew in Kenai! You will be exposed to challenging and rewarding work while learning the fundamentals of wildland firefighting. We are looking for motivated individuals with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. Most positions are full-time seasonal with an approximate six-month appointment. Opportunities
  • Wildland Firefighter/Firefighter/Natural Resources/Forestry – Serves as a Firefighter Type 2 on the Yukon Type 2 Initial Attack Crew performing fire suppression and fuels management duties in the most adverse climate, fuel and terrain conditions.
  • Wildland Fire Module Squad Boss – Responsible for assisting in the organization of the crew on and off fire line. There are openings for the Denali Wildland Fire Module or Yukon Fire Crew.
  • Wildland Fire Module Leader TFLD, ICT4, RXB2 – Serves as a Module Leader and supervises a 10-person Wildland Fire Module (WFM), overseeing proficiency in Wildland Fire Tactical Operations.
  • Wildland Fire Module Assistant CRWB, ICT5, FIRB – Serves as an Assistant Module Leader and assists in supervising a 10-person WFM, overseeing proficiency in Wildland Fire Tactical Operations.
  • Yukon Fire Crew Superintendent – Leads the crew in the safe and effective completion of assigned work, and will receive advanced training in fire suppression skills, plus training in leadership and supervision when necessary.
  • Yukon Fire Crew Assistant Superintendent – Serves as the Supervisor for a 20-person Type 2 Initial Attack Fire Crew and provides supervisory oversight to a 5-person project squad both on and off the fire line.

Our vision is to revitalize the traditional Chugach Native culture and language. The goal is to make Sugpiaq/ Eyak history and heritage a part of the regular school curriculum with support and direction from our Elders’ traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
